Math 141 · Lesson 17

Matrix-Vector Product

Step through Ax as a linear combination of the columns of A, with animated scaling and adding. The Abstract m × n mode runs the same steps for a general matrix.

Lesson 17: Linear Combinations

About this tool

Next, or the right arrow key, steps through the product:

  1. x‾\overline{x} is split into its components, each a scalar.
  2. Each column of AA is multiplied by its scalar.
  3. The scaled columns are added to give Ax‾A\overline{x}.

The left arrow key steps back. Every entry can be edited. AA can have up to four rows and four columns, and x‾\overline{x} up to four components. When the number of columns of AA differs from the number of components of x‾\overline{x}, the product is marked undefined. In the last step, the column or component with no partner is marked. Abstract m × n runs the same steps with entries aija_{ij} and xjx_j for a general m×nm \times n matrix.
